COHS' 24th Annual Heritage Awards 2008

The C.O.H.S. invites nominations for its twenty-fourth Annual Heritage Awards. These awards are to acknowledge those who have been involved in the restoration and maintenance of heritage buildings and areas in the Central Okanagan. The deadline for nominations is Friday, February 8, 2008.

The awards will be made as part of Heritage Week at the 26th Annual General Meeting of the Heritage Society on Thursday, February 21, 2008 at the Benvoulin Heritage Church. This year’s Heritage Week theme will be “Taking Care of Business: Heritage of Trade and Commerce ”.

The Society offers awards in six categories:

• Distinguished Community Service - Given to a person or persons in recognition of their service to the community in the heritage field.

• Restoration of the exterior of a building currently in non-residential use.

• Restoration of the exterior of a building currently in residential use.

• Continued preservation of a building - Given to a building to recognize the high quality of its exterior preservation and maintenance over the years, in keeping with its original design and structure.

• Construction of a new building compatible with its heritage surroundings.

• Restoration or preservation of a neighbourhood or area.

There will be no formal printed nomination forms this year. To nominate a person building or area please phone the Society at 861-7188 or email the Society at cohs@telus.net. Please give the category, the address or name of the nominee and your contact number.

Embroidery and Craft Show

The Central Okanagan Heritage Society is pleased to present the exquisite embroidery work of the late Anne de Beer of the Netherlands. Over 150 pieces will be on display at historic Benvoulin Heritage Church and Reid Hall, as well as a slide show of her other needle art works in other countries. Local crafting groups will also be hosting demonstrations and presenting their work.

Anne de Beer was born in the Netherlands and was a nurse during the second world war. She married after the war and had 3 children. After her children grew up, Anne started her needle art career. She produced over 250 pieces of fine needle art. Her oldest daughter Miriam of Kelowna is showing more than 150 pieces of her work. Anne loved the Okanagan and would have loved to help fundraise for the heritage society. She was an aficionado of real antiques and fine arts. At the needlecraft show there will also be a slide show of all her works that are currently shown in other countries.

Opening night is on Friday October 19th from 7pm to 9pm. Tickets for the opening night are $10 and include wine and nibblies, and can be purchased in advance from the COHS office - phone 861 7188 or email at cohs@telus.net. General admission tickets are available at the door on Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st October from 10am to 4pm for $5. All funds raised from the sale of tickets goes to the restoration efforts of COHS. Come and view the beautiful needlework and support heritage in the Okanagan.

COHS 25th Anniversary Gala Dinner

On October 5th, 2007 the Central Okanagan Heritage Society will hold an “Evening of Celebration” at the Capri Hotel on the occasion of the Society’s 25th Anniversary.

The evening will include a delicious harvest dinner, guest speaker, live entertainment, a silent auction and a fast and furious live auction, making this a lively and entertaining evening you will not want to miss. With the Heritage and Fall Harvest theme woven throughout the program – this will not be your typical fund-raising dinner. Mike Roberts will be hosting the evening, ensuring a fun and informative night will be had by all.

The Society looks forward to you joining us for this gala celebration, and is extending a special invitation to be the first to purchase a table of eight tickets for $800 or $100 per ticket. All proceeds will support the work of the Central Okanagan Heritage Society with emphasis on the restoration of the Brent’s Grist Mill site. The celebration will honour our local heritage and emphasize the importance of keeping our heritage alive.

A Successful AGM

There was a good turnout at this year's AGM. The presentation made by John Raybould titled "About the House" was a lively and nostalgic overview of various aspects of domestic social and cultural history from a century ago, and brought back many memories for those that attended the AGM. People could view and handle the artifacts that John and his wife Heather brought along, which really added to the fun of the evening.

Presentations were also made to the winners of the 2006 Heritage Awards. The winners for this year were:

Construction of a new building compatible with its heritage surroundings - 569 - 605 Elliott Avenue, Developers/Builders - Dwayne Parker, Ron Egert, Elmer Eidse
Restoration or preservation of a neighbourhood or area - 1900 Block Abbott Street (west side), Ms. V. Presley, Mr. and Mrs. B. Hobbs, Alice Cargo, Ed and Chris Allan, Ms. J. Mergens.

The Executive and Directors were also elected. The 2007 Board is made up of:

At the reception that followed, the 25th Anniversary cake was cut, tea and home made goodies were enjoyed and people caught up with old friends. A lovely evening was had by all!!

Heritage Week 2007
February 19th to 25th

This year's theme is Vernacular Heritage - Architecture without an Architect.

Monday 19th 7:30 am - Opening Breakfast at the Kelowna Art Gallery, Ellis Street. The guest speaker is Pat McCormick.

Monday 19th 1:30 pm - Presentation to City Council

Wednesday 21st 1 pm - Meet at the Orchard Museum in the historic Laurel Packinghouse, Ellis Street, and join a tour of the museum followed by a walk to the Military Museum and the Kelowna Centennial Museum.

Thursday 22nd 7 pm - Central Okanagan Heritage Society 25th Annual General Meeting at Benvoulin Heritage Church, and presentation of 2007 Heritage Awards. The guest speaker is John Raybould, who will be giving a lively presentation titled "About the House", a nostalgic overview of various aspects of domestic social and cultural history from a century ago when Kelowna was still very young.

Saturday 24th 1 pm - Walking tour of downtown museums, starting at the Orchard Museum in the historic Laurel Packinghouse. Book signing at the Military Museum.

Saturday 24th 3 pm - Afternoon tea hosted by FRAHCAS at the Lightbody's, 2302 Abbott Street, with guest speaker Mary Pynenburg, Director of Planning for the City of Kelowna

Sunday 25th 11:30 am - Downtown Kelowna Association has organised a Heritage Walk with Doug Schram. Meet at the Bennett Clock.

Sunday 25th 1pm - Afternoon tea hosted by KSAN at Knowles House, 865 Bernard Avenue.

2006 Guisachan Garden Show

2006 Guisachan Garden Show is now history, and we thank our donors, vendors, volunteers, speakers, entertainers and supporters for making it a warm and eventful weekend.
